I Worked Really Hard on This, 2021

Through rapid editing and overlay, I Worked Really Hard on This is a video combining two clips with audio in conversation with one another. The two clips are sourced from 24th season of The Bachelor and a holiday themed episode of the talk show, The Real. This piece discusses the roles occupied by peoples within a gift transaction as a metaphor for antiracist work, exacerbating the belief that “I’m trying” is enough to absolve the behavior. The video positions the “tears” of White women as a barrier of good intention, placing the blame on the receiver of the “gift” - framing her as someone who should be grateful to be getting anything at all.

This video is a ghost. A looming presence which reappears, fades, reappears, then fades again. Flowing in and out of consciousness just as the events that inspired it bring upon its resurrection.

In the Field is a video which serves to present action caught on cameras in the moment, blurring the connection between violence and play. The piece is framed around the trauma of school shootings and gun violence, featuring clips from cameras capturing moments from the Stoneman Douglas shooting in 2018. Brief clips from Parkland, FL are edited between found footage of deer in front lawns and backyards and a compilation of teachers scare-pranking their students when they fall asleep in class. The video shifts between the playfulness of jump scares in school to the fear which leads to flight when one’s life is threatened. In the Field features our shared spaces littered with violence and fear.
